A ginko is an opportunity for haiku poets to find inspiration through exploring their surroundings, often in a natural setting. The aim of Gadigal Ginko is for haiku poets to meet on an occasional, casual basis, in an outdoor setting that encourages haiku composition. Poets will spend time walking around the location individually, paying attention to their senses, and drafting, or making notes for, haiku. This will be followed by optional group discussion and sharing.
Where: Sydney, within about 10km of the GPO. Locations are parks or other outdoor settings close to the city and accessible by public transport. Exact locations will vary; meeting point details will be provided following registration for each particular ginko.
When: no fixed schedule, but several times per year, on varying days of the week. Dates and times will be advised approximately 4-6 weeks in advance of each ginko.
Duration: around 45-60 minutes for the ginko itself, plus optional discussion time afterwards. Allow some time for meeting up as a group before starting the ginko. Up to approximately 2 hours in total.
Who: contemporary haiku poets of all levels of experience. However, please note that Gadigal Ginko is not a class or formal workshop. Also, participating poets will not be expected to adhere to any specific format or definition of haiku.
What to bring: notebook and pen/pencil or equivalent for making notes and composing haiku; hat, sunscreen, umbrella, etc according to the weather; water, tea/coffee, snack, etc. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for gentle outdoor activity. There will usually be an opportunity to buy refreshments at a nearby kiosk or café.
Convenor: Leanne Mumford is the convenor of Gadigal Ginko.
